What is the Shoemaker Walk?

A “road march” from Tulsa OK to Stillwater OK in honor of Jared Shoemaker, US Marine Corporal and Tulsa Police Officer, who was killed in action in Iraq on September 4, 2006.  Donations are collected and presented to Special Olympics  Oklahoma in Jared’s name.

Who started the walk?

A Tulsa Police Officer wanted to do something to honor the name and sacrifice of Jared Shoemaker while doing something that would also benefit a worthy cause in his name.  He came up with the idea of a “road march”, spoke with some fellow Officers about his idea, and the Jared Shoemaker Memorial Walk was born.  The first Walk took place May, 2010.  This will be the 7th   annual walk.

You are raising donations.  To whom does this money go?

All proceeds of the Jared Shoemaker Memorial Walk go to the Special Olympics  Oklahoma.

Why the Special Olympics?

There is a long standing history of partnership between the United States Marine Corps, Law Enforcement and Special Olympics.  When the walk was developed it seemed the natural fit, and the monies are used right here in Oklahoma.

Why these dates?

The Jared Shoemaker Memorial Walk is scheduled to coincide with the Opening Ceremonies of the Special Olympics   Oklahoma Summer Games in Stillwater, OK.

If I can’t walk, but I want to participate in another way, what can I do?

The purpose of the walk is to honor Jared Shoemaker and to raise funds in his name to be provided to the Special Olympics  Oklahoma.  You may donate to that cause by clicking Donate at the top of the page.  You may purchase a  Jared Shoemaker Memorial Walk shirt.  You can also help us by linking our page to your social networking pages.

How long is the walk?

Approximately 68 miles, completed over the course of three days.

Who can participate?

All persons are welcome to participate.  Be mindful that this is a long, strenuous event.  Participants are advised to consider their ability and health and plan accordingly.
